Our Progress in the Listening class has given me a better understanding of music theory, and equipped me with effective methods of improving my musical ear. With a greater awareness of music theory, and through practicing my musical recognition, i am now more able to identify musical qualities and characteristics. These skills will be invaluable to me as a musician and i intend to continue building on what i have learned.
During the Aural perception (or listening) class we have been doing many exercises aimed at developing our ear, and musical recognition. These are important skills for any musician, and as this is an area that i often have difficulty in, it has been very helpful to further my understanding, and learn how to improve my ear. Most importantly, i have learned that my musical recognition can only be improved with regular practice.
Initially we focused on improving our rhythm, and recognition of note durations and time signatures. Later we moved on to identifying the pitch of the notes, and began to work on identifying intervals and chords. Some of the exercises also involved us deciding if a piece of music was in a major or minor key, and identifying at what point (if any) the piece of music modulated. We have also learned about the various types of cadences, and have been taught how to identify them in a piece of music. |
